Dr. Elena Polukhin is an Assistant Professor of
Medicine, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis,
Minnesota. Departments of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation and Internal Medicine. Our clinic
is involved in professional education of students,
residents and physicians.
Russian American Medical Association is happy
to announce its new Educational Exchange Program/Visiting
Professorship for USA physicians and doctors from
other countries.
National
and International Exchange Program / Visiting
Professorship :
This program was developed in collaboration with
Eastern European Medical Society of MN, University
of MN and endorsed by the International Society
of Physical Medical Rehabilitation (ISPMR).
One of our missions is to promote clinical, academic
and humanitarian collaboration between USA and
other countries across the world. Taking into
consideration that many of our clients are recent
immigrants from former Soviet Union and other
countries, we emphasize the importance of development
and implementation of culturally sensitive rehabilitation
programs.
We are familiar with outstanding achievements
of many physicians across the world, and there
is no doubt that practicing community of MN and
USA will be interested in closer acquaintance
with those accomplishments.
At the same time we would like to give an opportunity
for physicians interested in innovative methods
of pain management and rehabilitation to get theoretical
and practical hands-on experience.
The educational curriculum of the program was
developed by physicians, experts in rehabilitation
medicine and approved by the educational committee
of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation
Medicine.
Primary objective: introduction
to current North American rehabilitation management
and innovative rehabilitation methods of most
common disorders in the primary care and rehabilitation
inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation settings.
Secondary Objectives:
provide hands-on training in advanced rehabilitation
procedures and techniques.
Target audience: rehabilitation
physicians and medical providers from USA and
countries across the world interested in rehabilitation
management and innovative techniques.
Time Frame: 2-4 weeks.
Program Curriculum:
- Realistic rehabilitation goals in patients
with different disorders (cardio-vascular, musculo-skeletal,
neurological). Major principles of inpatient,
out-patient and subacute rehabilitation programs,
their design and outcomes evaluation.
- General principles of musculo-skeletal, neurological,
gerontological rehabilitation.
- Arthritis management. Introduction to viscosupplementation,
prolotherapy, neurotherapy.
- Headache, neck and low back pain, rehab management.
Newer medications, cranio-sacral therapy, acupuncture,
BoNT chemodenervation.
- General principles of spinal cord injury,
stroke and traumatic brain injury rehabilitation.
Spasticity management (newer medications, chemodenervation,
nerve blocks, intrathecal Baclofen pumps).
- Integrative Pain management program with
use of trigger point injections, chemodenervation,
nerve blocks, epidural injections, intrathecal
pumps, spinal cord stimulators.
- Special interest topics: neurogenic bladder
management, aesthetic and cosmetic medicine,
mesotherapy, rejuvenative injection therapy.
- Injections techniques: chemodenervation using
BoNT, tendon sheath and bony attachments injections,
intra-articular injections, prolotherapy, trigger
point injections.
- General principles of electro-diagnosis in
patients with radiculopathy, neuropathy, spinal
stenosis. Introduction to electromyography and
nerve conduction study.
- Physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture,
herbal medicine and physical modalities prescription
in rehabilitation.
- Medico-legal issues in primary care settings:
workman’s compensation and no fault cases,
independent medical examinations.
- Culturally sensitive rehabilitation. Major
principles of rehab medicine in different ethnic
groups

2. Hennepin County Medical Center/Hennepin County
Associates.
3. Integrative Pain Management and Rehabilitation
Program, Alternative Medicine Clinic.
4. Interventional Pain Management.
The program designed in a way that designated
mentors will accept physicians from other states
and/or countries and provide one-to one preceptorship
in their program centers. We also expect that
as USA physicians will be interested in world
humanitarian missions and will bring innovative
knowledge to rehab physicians all over the world.

by educational grants.
